The Kianderi washing station is located at the foothills of Mount Kenya, near Kerugoya in Kirinyaga County. It belongs to the Inoi Farmers Cooperative Society and receives cherries from 900 active producers. Situated between 1650 and 1800 metres above sea level, it benefits from mineral‑rich red volcanic soils and an ideal climate, with 1400 millimetres of annual rainfall and an average temperature of 20.5 degrees. This western part of Kirinyaga is known for being one of the most fertile areas in the country.
The producers cultivate the SL28, SL34, Batian and Ruiru 11 varieties on clay‑loam soils. Flowering takes place from February to April, and the main harvest runs from October to January.
Upon arrival at the station, the cherries are hand‑sorted to remove under‑ripe cherries and defects. They are then pulped, fermented overnight, washed, and graded. Drying on raised beds lasts between 10 and 20 days depending on conditions.
