Kenya - Kamwenja AA - Lot #070 - 250g

We're excited to share our very first Kenyan coffee from this year's harvest - a profile both elegant and intense.

This lot hails from the renowned Nyeri Hill Estate in Kenya's Nyeri region, grown on young trees predominantly of the SL-28 variety.

These ideal conditions lend the cup an exceptional character: clear notes of lime and rhubarb pie, vibrant sweetness throughout, and occasional flickers of red fruit that keep things lively.

While we often lean toward Kenyan coffees for filter brewing, this one surprised us. It’s equally stunning as an espresso - syrupy in mouthfeel, bursting with clarity, and finishing with a long, refreshing acidity that keeps you coming back for another sip.

Nestled in Nyeri County at 2,000 meters above sea level, Nyeri Hill Farm is a historic coffee estate owned by the Archdiocese of Nyeri. Established by the Consolata Fathers in 1904, the farm began growing coffee in 1914 and today spans 344 hectares, with 398,530 coffee trees producing primarily SL-28 (82%), along with Ruiru-11 (14%) and Batian varieties. The farm operates two processing stations, Nyeri Hill and Kamwenja.

Despite receiving less than ideal rainfall - about 950 mm annually - the farm has adapted with a drip irrigation system covering a third of the land, with plans for full coverage. Investments in wet milling, water recycling, and coffee husk hulling help reduce waste and costs while promoting sustainability. Coffee husks are even repurposed as organic fertilizer to enrich the soil.

To maintain high yields, coffee trees are replaced every six years with young, disease-resistant plants from the farm’s own nurseries. Other activities include tea cultivation, livestock rearing, horticulture, and afforestation, ensuring diverse income sources.

Nyeri Hill Farm employs 90% of its workforce from the local community and partners with dairy and pig farms to support neighboring farmers. With a focus on sustainable production and community impact, the farm continues its legacy while investing in innovative practices for the future.
